Example Calculations

  1. 20.0 grams of wet plant pulp were placed in an oven to dry. The mass of the dried pulp was 3.05 grams. Calculate the oven-dried (OD) consistency     for this particular plant fiber.

                    OD consistency =     grams oven-dried fiber     x 100

                                                         grams wet pulp

  1. Chemical charge is the mass of chemical required to react with the pulp. It is usually specified in terms of the mass % of reacting chemical based on the mass of the oven-dried (OD) fiber. The chemical charge of sodium hypochlorite is 8%. Calculate the grams of sodium hypochlorite you will need based on the OD consistency determined in Problem #1.

Chemical charge =     8 grams of sodium hypochlorite

                                                            100 grams OD fiber

  1. The Supermarket brand of bleach has a sodium hypochlorite concentration of 6% by mass. Rewrite the concentration as a conversion factor

    grams sodium hypochlorite =

     100 g of bleach

  1. Using the factor label method and the % sodium hypochlorite, convert the grams of sodium hypochlorite determined in Problem #2 to grams of bleach you will have to mass out.

  1. After bleaching and filtering, you have 38.3 grams of wet pulp. The bleaching process has altered the original OD consistency. Estimate the new grams of OD fibers you now have according to the following formula:

new grams of OD fiber = (original grams of OD fiber from Calculation #1)(95%)

  1. The basic recipe for a batch of pulp to be refined is grams OD fiber at a 1% consistency.

                                                        1% slurry =     g new OD fiber

                                                                                  grams total mixture

Solve this equation for grams total mixture: grams total mixture = __________________

  1. grams total mixture = ( g wet bleached fiber) + (grams water)

Calculate the mass of water needed to add to your grams of wet fiber to equal mass of total mixture.

  1. Convert the mass of water calculated in Step 3 to milliliters.
